JAN – EP launch at Nighthawks

JAN – Jan Wisniewski lives in Narrm and grew up in Lutruwita, Tasmania. His name is pronounced like yarn. His songs help him express his thoughts and emotions. Fresh of the release of his debut singles ‘Life in Music’ and ‘Day Moon’, JAN launches his self-titled EP.

Midnight Violet – Midnight Violet are an Indie-Folk quintet from Narrm/ Melbourne Australia. With influences from the likes of Mazzy Star, Leonard Cohen and Elliott Smith. The band is passionate about crafting a lyrical landscape and delving into the everyday human experience that we all tend to overlook.

Vanderlay – Vanderlay is the moniker of Melbourne born, folk singer songwriter Caspar Conrick. Vanderlay’s third record ‘Doubtful Sound’ is their most ambitious yet, marrying their baroque-folk compositions, with the kind of detail driven lyricism that has defined Vanderlays output from the beginning. ‘Doubtful Sound’ evokes the streets of Paris, where the record was written, and litters it with doubt and false hope.

Dayhawks At Nighthawks featuring Duncan Graham And The Way In

Dayhawks At Nighthawks: a Saturday afternoon three-act show at Collingwood's finest indie venue. Three very different bands will cover all the moods and sounds you need.

First up, to bang you awake, is the Mornington Peninsula's interdimensional and devolutionary guitar/synth rockers, Rhizome And The Flavonoids

https://rhizomeandtheflavonoids.bandcamp.com/album/superimposer

Next up is Matilda O'Brien with her band Dead Driver. From the mid-North of NSW, via Portugal, and now down here south with us, Tilly runs a beautiful line in roomy indie folk and has got the voice and players to close the somewhat elegant and heartbreaking deal.

https://open.spotify.com/artist/7bwNWQeAJkRlebOpMw7lww

Finally, Duncan Graham And The Way In close out your afternoon, and lead you into the sunset, hopefully whistling an amalgam of their indie pop miniatures and their urban country soul epics.

A Night of Micro Burns / AS A RIVAL

After a long cold winter, AS A RIVAL return to the stage at NIGHTHAWKS. Bringing with them their brand of alt rock with a sprinkle of punk and a dash of prog, AAR are ready to remind audiences of their anthemic hooks and riffs.

From across the river, MICRO CUTS (NSW), the rock punk trio channeling the grit and heartache of the landscape around them into every chord and lyrics. Their sound is both a battle cry and a balm - raw, defiant & achingly human.

Wollongong-based, KYLAN DAFFY, is an Australian alt-rock artist weaving raw emotion into a soundscape that fuses emo, shoegaze, and midwest punk energy. Born in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury scene and raised in rural Australia, Albury, Kylan’s music reflects a life shaped by contrasts—gritty and heartfelt, nostalgic yet forward-pushing.

RAZOR BURN is back with serious intensity and their new single, POINT OF DEFEAT, has proven that they are the most promising hard rock bands in Australia that have surfaced out of the underground scene. Following the success of their latest records, the brilliantly released albums Avow and Into The Void, this outfit of Melbourne delivers their unique blend of punk attack, alternative rock flair and classic hard rock force. The song brings the audience on a journey of the haunting opening notes, followed by thunderous explosive vocals and guitars, which makes the song both unfiltered and vicious.

LAZERLIPS HALLOWEEN SPECIAL 2025 W/ Harminia + SHUM

It’s that time of year again… the pumpkins are carved, the eyeliner is running, and Lazerlips are summoning their 4th annual Halloween special at Nighthawks!

On Saturday, November 1st, the punk/alt-rock trio trade in their mortal skins for costumes, chaos, and a set filled with their own monster mash of fuzzy guitars, eerie samples, and a few surprise covers. Every year gets louder, spookier, and more unhinged — and this one promises to be no different.

Joining the ritual are Naarm’s own Harminia, serving up shimmering shoegaze power with a gothic twist, and Scarlet Whine, their equally haunting alt-rock kin. Together, it’s a night of noise, nostalgia, and just enough mischief to wake the dead.

So dig out your costume, sharpen your fangs, and get ready to howl at the moon — because Lazerlips’ Halloween tradition is back from the crypt, and you don’t want to miss it.

Synthy Arvo - Featuring The Motifs, Exosquelette & Denim Owl

Three somewhat synthy bands tickling plastic till the break of evening.

The Motifs are a Melbourne, Australia-based musical project, primarily fronted by Alexis Hall, active since 2003. Starting as a solo project, Hall creats warm, indie-pop music featuring lush, hushed vocals over instrumental arrangements of acoustic guitars, drum machines, and Casio keyboards. The music combines beautiful, often melancholy lyrics with sophisticated instrumental work, creating a unique and enchanting sound that has earned them a significant listener base.

Exosquelette are a French-Australian Indie Pop band. They play with "toy instruments" such as Casiotone-synths, ukulele and glockenspiel.
Tempo Music blog described our first single release as “fast, fun and it’s full of joyous pop melodies”
They mix French and Australian language, like a croissant filled with BBQ shapes.

Denim Owl is a Melbourne-based sophisticated-pop band formed around the music project of Janita Foley. The five-piece group, including Joe Foley, Irit Rozenfeld, Jill Farrar, and Stephanie Hooke, create "handmade tunes scuffed up by unapologetically long instrumental-wig-outs". Their music is a blend of delicate, experimental dream pop with extended instrumental sections, often leading to "sick wig-out jams" on stage.

Coconut Shy w/Day One and Materia @ Nighthawks Bar

Day One: Based in Melbourne, formed by members from different generations which brings a unique blend of sound - from jangly indie to distortion-filled hard rock. Imagine a TV show that appeals to all audiences - Day One is that, but in the music world.

Materia: Materia has rejected modernity but overshot tomorrow, unwittingly exchanging their guitars for lutes. Glam metal vocal tones unleash soaring melodies descending on a bed of 70s inspired rock. Syncopated riffs belted from mandolins and violins alike are framed by thunderous beats evoking echoes of hardcore drumming. Unorthodox and unapologetic, Materia heralds the end of the age of guitar.

Coconut Shy: Once the indie/folk alt-rock solo music project of singer/songwriter Joseph Mackey, Coconut Shy came to life in 2025 with its evolution into a full-fledged fourpiece. Inspired by the likes of early Coldplay, Dire Straits, Spacey Jane and Mumford & Sons, their music is filled with a creative blend of soft and heavy indie-folk rock, introspective lyrics and a bunch of damn catchy choruses. Its music for a singalong around a campfire, a road-trip to the beach or an afternoon spent indoors on a rainy day. But then again, it’s music that fits in between those things with a couple of the tunes certainly drift off to the edge of that musical ballpark. Give us a whirl and you’ll see what we mean.

Ant Gallery with Monnie, Gaia Scarf and Moby Beefheart

Ant Gallery are making their Melbourne debut! Joined by local faves Gaia Scarf & Monnie :))

Ant Gallery put folk, rock and alternative music in a blender with a sprig of funk to make something earthy, groovy, and deceptively nutritious. Their earthy originals serve up heaping helpings of lush harmony, chorus-y unison, lyrical pathos, quirky guitar licks and driving bass lines. Recipients of the Gill Rees Young Musicians award & finalists in the Infinite Song Contest at the 2025 National Folk Festival, you can't help but feel the groundswell underneath Ant Gallery is rising.

Is that one person singing? Or two? A live double-track? Come see for yourselves!

Gaia Scarf weaves multiple threads of influence into the tapestry of her sound. Harnessing Folk story-telling, Indie honesty and Soul-filled vocals, her music is an open invitation to feel it all.

Using lyrical catharsis as a means to understand the arcane, Gaia treads personal yet shared ground as she sings on identity, love, family, grief and the ache to belong.

Monnie, a multi-hyphenate musician & producer, aims to connects and expand. Art exists only in context. Drawing from juxtaposing inspirations of classical and dance/EDM music, & her experience with dream pop, shoe gaze and punk rock, monnie wants to show you how everything can connect.

Get ready for a night of folky, funky, dream pop-y fun!
