Jad Pinnone with Duxie Franklin and Molly McKew

Anchored by a resonant voice, exhibiting the best of a storyteller and expressing his influences stemming from his Shilha Moroccan and Italian cultural roots, Australia’s Jad Pinnone is a sonic poet blending ambient blues, folk, and soulful R&B-infused maqam chants. Drawing from Moroccan folklore and spiritual Gnawa music and merging it with the alternative, Jad creates hypnotic soundscapes rich with dreamy, atmospheric elements that transport the listener to another world.
Following a successful performance at St Kilda Festival and a celebrated return to Melbourne after a standout solo acoustic set at Port Fairy Folk Festival, Jad now introduces a fresh chapter in his musical journey — performing with a new, multicultural band. This evolution brings in a fusion of Moroccan folklore, world music, and Sicilian traditions, with fresh instrumentation and a broader sound palette. The result is a more inclusive and immersive sonic experience, expanding on his unique identity while deepening the connection to his heritage.
Influences include Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Eminem, Matt Corby, Tash Sultana, Pearl Jam, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and the greats of Moroccan, Sicilian and Italian music.

Molly Mckew

Molly grew up singing folk songs, choral pieces, and the Cranberries, and currently counts Sharon Van Etten, Diane Cluck, Jesca Hoop and Cat Power as her favorite influences. She has been writing songs and performing (guitar and vocals) around Melbourne for the last few years, first under the name Nancy Cole, then fronting a duo called Blue Lining, who released their EP, ‘Plaza’ in 2019. Her debut solo record, ‘I couldn’t grasp it’ is a dreamy and harmony-drenched journey into sad-girl stuff like solitude, love, and losing it. It was recorded and produced by Marcus Hobbs of the Brunswick All Girls Choir, features Anika Ostendorf (Hachiku) on keys and Robert Wrigley (East Brunswick All Girls Choir) on guitar, and was mastered by Mikey Young.

Duxie Franklin

Melbourne-based, multi-instrumentalist Duxie Franklin effortlessly combines elements of Pop, Indie, Alternative and Folk to create her endearing sound. Her unique and catchy melodies draw frequent comparisons to legends such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Björk and Gillian Welch.
Duxie’s ethereal, pure voice has been praised as “one of the finest voices in the city” by Melbourne Unplugged. Tiana Speter, writing for The Soundcheck, described Duxie as possessing “a voice that melts quicker than an ice cream on a summer’s day”.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Duxie is passionately involved in every step of the music making process from writing and production to video direction, photography and even merch, costume and jewellery making. Duxie’s enchanting live performances feature her animated banter and trademark flamboyant stage get-up.

Sudden Debt with Pretty in Pink

Sudden Debt with Pretty in Pink

Naarm/Melbourne trio Sudden Debt are set to release their self-titled debut album, out 1st August on New Weird Australia. Exploring the space between bleak pop, minimalist post-punk and dissonant noise-rock, the project creates something hypnotically abstract, yet strangely danceable. Sudden Debt strip music back to a form that is raw, unflinching, and intimate.

The record is the product of instinct, limitation, and with that, total freedom. There was no blueprint, no fixed roles, no prior agenda, just three people creating their music. With vocals improvised in a single take or built from fragments of stream-of-consciousness, and instrumentation twisted through tremolo, delay, drum pads and vocal effects, ‘Sudden Debt’ is both immediate and elusive.

After returning from extensive touring with previous band Heart Beach (Spunk! Records / Rough Skies / Kingfisher Bluez), bandleader Jonathon McCarthy reached out to nearly 50 old friends with the aim of creating a new project — with no assumptions about who would play what, or what it would sound like. Enlisting members of Ivy St (Wireless) and others, the band that emerged took shape organically and instinctively, driven more by chemistry and experimentation than any fixed vision. The album was recorded at Head Gap just before it tragically burnt down. It was recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by Finn Keane.

MATT GREEN (HAPPY LONESOME)

That’s how it all started out. Then duo, trio and eventually 5 piece band….then back again. Geelong born band - Happy Lonesome started out as a recording project back in 98’ when New Season went on hiatus for a bit. Matt Green teamed up with then partner, Claire Birchall and the New Season’s Jarrod Quarrel (Lost Animal) to record Matt’s songs with a bunch of other Geelong crew in support. Eventually that turned to a 5 piece band. Since then Happy Lonesome has gone through many line up changes over the years. Pete Azzopardi replaced Quarrel in 2001, many many shows and a handful of recordings ensued. Happy Lonesome are now on a break for a bit, so Matt is solo again. Drawing very favourable and flattering, if slightly over-the-top comparisons to the likes of Green on Red, Dead Moon, Husker Du and Tom Petty amongst others Matt still straps on the guitar and plays some songs from time to time. A new Happy Lonesome recording project is currently in the works. Until then, solo again…

LAZERLIPS x NIGHTHAWKS w/ Harminia

Well, well, well...
Break in those new Doc Martens and put that waterproof eyeliner to the ultimate test — Lazerlips are back and resurrecting chaos at Nighthawks. The punk/alt-rock trio have stumbled out of their tombs once more to remind you why they might just be the world’s meanest, nicest, most handsome, cutest, most talented, hardest-working, best-smelling band on the planet. Or maybe they just really like playing music.

Either way, they’re recharged, unhinged, and absolutely out for blood — and with new drummer Zac Fernandez smashing the kit like it owes him money, they’ve never sounded more alive.

If you’ve yet to witness the mayhem, expect fuzzy slide guitar, grungy vocals, eerie samples, lyrics soaked in vampire lore, '50s rockabilly swagger, and yes — the occasional black metal blast beat thrown in just for the hell of it. It's groovy. It's loud. It slaps.

Choose wisely: hop in the pit, or live with regret for all eternity.

Also taking the stage are Harminia, Naarm’s own alt-rock/shoegaze visionaries. With soaring vocals, shimmering guitar textures, and an aesthetic that refuses to be ignored, they’re here to tilt the local scene on its axis.

So whether you're chasing catharsis or just killing time this Friday, make it a night with Lazerlips and Harminia at Nighthawks. You won't regret it — until maybe the next morning.
