The Chimpeltons Rockin at Nighthawks

Revered punk/metal fanatics The Chimpeltons are taking their signature chimp rock from Queensland to the chilly streets of Melbourne this June. Taking residency at Nighthawks for an evening of killer riffs and headbanging, The Chimpeltons are keen to share their take on the ever-evolving punk/metal genres to the immersive Melbourne music scene. Coming off the back of their first interstate tour in January, their live set has become one renowned for high energy and chaos in the Brisbane scene. Drawing influences from the likes for Pantera, Soundgarden and Civic their breakdowns and powerful vocals have made them a staple of the Brisbane circuit. Starting off the evening with a bang are the local maniacs Bin Stompers, and the legendary Electric Funeral. For the price of 15$, good times and great bands are guaranteed at Nighthawks Thursday the 26th of June.

Buddy J Francis with FRANKLY and Leo Francis & Dave Turner

BIO:
DIY multi-instrumentalist Buddy J Francis makes psych rock that adds a dash of other genres such as hip hop and folk while throwing in some tongue-in-cheek comedic bits for good measure.

In a recording sense he operates like Mac Demarco and Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) – tracking each instrument personally. Each track takes months of work.

Live performances are more like a thespian Tash Sultana - using a loop pedal and multiple instruments while performing as several different characters (each with their own costumes and personalities).

Called an ‘endearingly audacious’ artist who makes ‘psychonautic scuzz’ by A&R Factory.

SHOW PROMO:
One-man-band Buddy J Francis is here to play some guitar, drums and sing (sometimes at the same time) and he's brought some friends along. Whether it's British hip-hop legend Cornelius Strongbottom (aka The Baddest Of All Time)(aka The BOAT) or the charismatic Californian Jimothy LaJones or the slightly less charismatic and mood-killing dark poet Moody J Bigfingers, you are sure to witness a musical journey that delves into such topics as love, Coopers Pale Ale, loving Coopers Pale Ale and, of course, cyber safety.

Za Noon 'Heartdrag' Album Launch

Za Noon launches her debut record 'Heartdrag' with full 5-piece band for the first time. On supports are Ruby Milner (band) & do the bed.

Za Noon is the alias of Melbourne artist Jess Zanoni. Known as the frontwoman of alt-rock band Arbes, Za Noon is Jess’s solo venture into intriguing, incandescent alternative folk & pop. Her debut record evokes the shifting tides akin to connection, in romance, and with the world— both inner and outer. Za Noon music attempts to embody the ineffable, a tender and spirited measure of felt time and place.

Ruby Milner is a singer-songwriter from Melbourne, with roots in country/folk, later influenced by jazz and indie-rock sounds. Her writing combines classically inspired progressions with careful and honest lyricism, inspired by musicians such as Joni Mitchell, Adrienne Lenker and Rufus Wainwright.

do the bed are a five-piece alt-folk rock band. Their music is slow, rhythmic, and a bit rough around the edges — folk at the core, with a darker, heavier feel. Just songs they like playing.

MATT GREEN (HAPPY LONESOME)

That’s how it all started out. Then duo, trio and eventually 5 piece band….then back again. Geelong born band - Happy Lonesome started out as a recording project back in 98’ when New Season went on hiatus for a bit. Matt Green teamed up with then partner, Claire Birchall and the New Season’s Jarrod Quarrel (Lost Animal) to record Matt’s songs with a bunch of other Geelong crew in support. Eventually that turned to a 5 piece band. Since then Happy Lonesome has gone through many line up changes over the years. Pete Azzopardi replaced Quarrel in 2001, many many shows and a handful of recordings ensued. Happy Lonesome are now on a break for a bit, so Matt is solo again. Drawing very favourable and flattering, if slightly over-the-top comparisons to the likes of Green on Red, Dead Moon, Husker Du and Tom Petty amongst others Matt still straps on the guitar and plays some songs from time to time. A new Happy Lonesome recording project is currently in the works. Until then, solo again…

Cabin Fog "Phantom Lover" Single Launch

An emerging artist in line with the current popular alternative rock acts such as Black Country New Road, Cameron Winter, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Alice Phoebe Lou. Cabin Fog is celebrating the release of their debut single “Phantom Lover”; with a historic showcase of some of the most impressive songwriters local to the Melbourne Music Scene. Cabin Fog is the project headed by Callum Williams and the songs written explore complex emotional states with sometimes unreliable narrators but with infectious multilayered melodies that you can’t fully absorb with just one listen. Cabin Fog is a prime example that you can have catchy music that doesn’t lack depth and if you would like some examples let me tell you about the supporting acts.

First off Canadian Born, Darwin Raised Singer-Songwriter Abbey Rose, A modern reflection of the best music popular within the 00s. Abbey was a grand finalist in Listen Up’s 2023 Songwriting Contest and has played alongside Gypsy Lee when supporting the iconic vocal group, The Corrs. Blending R&B,Hip Hop, Jazz and Pop Punk and hooks that will stay in your mind for days on end, Abbey Rose is sure to impress!

Lottie Davitt is an upcoming Singer-Songwriter native to Melbourne, growing up in and around music. Heavily inspired by classic acts such as Bob Dylan and Jodi Mitchell, Lottie has a knack for telling deep and intriguing stories but also blending it with great moments of comedic writing that doesn’t come off as tacky. Lottie Davitt bares her personality whole-heartedly through her music not only through her songwriting and vocal delivery but also how she plays the piano.

Gardiner is a band where it isn’t a question of “Are they going to blow up?” and more “When are they going to blow up?”. A sound that would be a perfect fit among Triple J Regulars such as Lime Cordiale, The Rubens and San Cisco, it’s just a matter of time before they become mainstays there. Their live performances are packed to the brim with energy and it’s impossible to listen and not want to jump around the room in pure elation.

Denim Owl with CHEESES, Super Melody and Coma Toast

Denim Owl is the long term music project of music maker and night owl Janita Foley who is known for dispensing delicate, pensive, experimental dream pop. The project has recently morphed into five-piece form, and the Owl band are ready to flaunt their newly minted four-years-in-the-making album. Janita and musical associates Joe Foley, Irit Rozenfeld, Jill Farrar, and Stephanie Hooke, aim to play their handmade tunes scuffed up by unapologetically long instrumental-wig-outs, and will make no exception as they celebrate the release of Fall Apart, a 5-minute dalliance in meandering pop, which lands with a music video shot by Berlin based filmmaker Alex Badham.

Special guests on the night are:

CHEESES use lo-fi electro sounds, guitar and bass combined with quirky song writing and en pointe vocal harmonies. Cheeses is the latest from long term musical collaborators Jane McCracken and Eva Sommerfeld who released several classic badass-twee-heartbreak albums as The Foots.

Super Melody is the brainchild of James Cecil who made his name with globe/genre trotting pop group Architecture In Helsinki. His 2010 album Destination Unknown is a slice of rogue pop genius that is so good we simply weren't ready for any more tunes until now.

Coma Toast are a Kiwi-flavoured mystery boy band made up of two lovely gentlemen whose sound remains bathed in mystique. You'll find out what they do if you're willing to stand the suspense.

Honeybone with Major Bummer & The Trip Hazard

Major Bummer are a Melbourne based guitar-focused supergroup of bedroom geniuses featuring members of many bands that toured the planet and became so beloved that when they broke up the world Eternal Sunshined themselves, which is why it might feel like you have never heard of any of them.

The follow up to debut Party Time album (Heart Trouble) is a huge sonic leap forward - now with added synth AND guitar solos - and is due out later this year.

To promote the release of 2nd single Gummy Bears, Major Bummer toured the Western U.S. in their northern fall.

When a certain Major Bummer's mother-in-law asked for a little groovy guidance about medicinal candies she'd heard about in her Mahjong game, The Bummers gave pause...

As something of a team of experts in the edible arts and about to send her a stream of hyperlinks with peer reviewed clinical trials and testimony from California Sober housewives, we then thought it'd be way more fun to write her a cautionary song instead...

Start low and go slow Mumma!

Ryan Davis (USA) + Sweet Whirl solo

Ryan Davis (USA) + Sweet Whirl solo

Louisville, Kentucky avant-folk songwriter Ryan Davis makes his first visit to Australia, headlining Nighthawks with support from Sweet Whirl in solo mode.

After more than 15 years of releasing music in outfits State Champion, Tropical Trash and others, Dancing on the Edge is the first album produced under Kentucky-based songwriter Ryan Davis’ name.

Ryan Davis continues in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt, Terry Allen, Souled American and David Berman’s Silver Jews, but reimagines the dated archetype of the modern day indie troubadour. A seven-song, 53-minute basement folk opus, Dancing On the Edge ranges from bare-boned, achingly crooned avant-folk tales to jovial, collaborative excursions into long-form experimental country-tinged rock. The sprawling double album was self-released at the end of 2023 and recently reissued by UK label Tough Love.

Dancing on the Edge is a dense collection of Americana-Noir that navigates a familiar yet alternate reality, one of enchanted mundanity and uniquely Mid-Southern introspection. Simultaneously antisocial and outwardly inviting, free of cynicism yet slightly stepped in paranoia, Dancing on the Edge is as delicately choreographed and emotionally connective as it is, at times, absurd.

Ryan Davis is currently touring the US with Bill Callahan, just finished a tour supporting MJ Lenderman and did a co-headline European tour in 2024 with Australia’s own Ned Collette.

“This is the sound of someone bearing a torch.” - Bill Callahan
“One of the finest beard-rock slabs of the century.” - Byron Coley

Autobahns (Germany) with Street Sweeper + W.OM.B.A.T

Leipzig via Lugano’s weirdo punk heroes Autobahns will be returning to Australia this June! After their first tour in January 2024, they’re back this time hitting both coasts, alongside a smokin’ roster of local and interstate supports. Their “First LP” was a beloved release from renowned Victorian label Legless Records and now they hit us with a split with Melbourne kings Elvis 2. Hope you freakos are ready.

“If you were waiting for the typical and overused egg-punk stuff, this is not your album, cause although Giulliano always seemed to us the top-boy of the class from the old continent, with this "First LP" he has surpassed any of our expectations with a sound where weirdness, the wild synth-punk-garage reminiscent of pioneer bands like Ausmuteants and even a touch of Skate-punk are threaded with unusual class over a layer of juicy and freaky LoFi that makes it simply irresistible... A killer one!”

 - Tremendo Garaje

“You may not know Giuliano Iannarella, the Germany and Switzerland-based punk rocker, but the debut Autobahns album First LP! makes a strong case that he deserves a seat alongside fellow rippers-to-watch Gee Tee, Alien Nosejob, and Sick Thoughts. It’s not easy to designate exactly where this lives in the realms of egg, chain, and skate punk—it’s a journey across all those vibes. There’s a track here called “Ciapa Male,” and it’s just choppy and relentless rock’n’roll that could burn for a full hour without getting old. It’s the kind of debut with so much power, so many major songs, and so many different vibes packed into one album, it feels like a star turn for Iannarella. Synths attempt to simmer things down near the end, but it’s useless: First LP! burns hot.”

Munroe w/ The Cheaks & Emma Yue

MUNROE are excited to be joined by emerging indie rock act, The Cheaks (NSW) making their Naarm debut; and Melbourne-based gritty, indie-folk artist Emma Yue.

On the back of recording their upcoming EP, Munroe will be bringing their indie folk sound to the stage. With a slew of releases on the horizon Munroe will offer their usual gut-wrenching lyricism paired with, what may be described as mid-set 'jokes'.

Hailing from the steel city of Newcastle, The Cheaks bring a fresh energy to the indie rock scene, blending classic influences with a contemporary edge that captivates audiences from the first note. Following the success of their debut EP Sirens, The Cheaks are set to unleash their hard-hitting new single, Wildfire - the first taste of their highly anticipated upcoming EP. To mark the occasion, they'll be hitting the road, bringing their electrifying live show to Melbourne.

A self-confessed purveyor of the phrase 'do it for the plot', Emma Yue embodies the rollercoaster ups and downs of your early 20s with genre blending indie, folk and rock sounds. While she shares her psycho-drama-queen antics, she also shares deeply personal and confessional writing without shying away from vulnerability.

Fingers crossed it should be a pretty special evening xx

Oil Rig with Rosaries and TV Casualty

Two-piece anti-cappo proto-punk zig-zag ka-blam. Short answer; Oil Rig.

Long answer if you must, a minimalist punk duo writing grubby little bass riffs and tub-thumping tub thumping. Forming at a midweek show in barter town, Oil Rig is a trashy love letter to any band that’s got something to say; a trashy, drunken scribbling that we hope comes off earnest.

Songs about radicals, capital and sabbaticals (two truths and a lie). We tried to be straight edge but we both work hospo. Tried being Devo but we don’t get synths.

Carlson Chronical - Our Carlson with Captain Beep Boop and Euniq at Nighthawks!

CARLSON CHRONICLE at Nighthawks!

It’s no secret that The Peoples Poet, Our Carlson doesn’t mind a bit of pool, a few beers and a smoke, so to celebrate Nighthawks new outdoor, undercover, smoking area pool table he has put together a lineup of his favourite electronically backed, vocally fronted acts to celebrate.

Headlining we have the John Cooper Clarke of Keilor Park, Our Carlson. Ranting and raving over everything from Jungle and Breaks to Donk and Hyperpop on everything from class war to Disability to astrology and getting pegged. He’s disabled, pissed off, searching for a revolution and telling everyone about it.

Captain Beep-boop is a transistor-based trans sister who plays electronic punk songs on a modified Telstra “Bluephone” payphone.”

Yeah so the captain is from another planet, dialling up songs from her teledex into an old blue phone you might find at the pub or footy club up until 10 years ago. Once dialled in she controls the track with the keypad while singing down the line about Ian touring and walking out of a gender neutral bathroom in the inner north of Melbourne a different gender than she walked in as. Mind blowing concept with the tracks to match. TISM fans will be in attendance.

Euniq is a proud Sistergirl who has been producing genre bending music for the last 3 years.

She sums it up as "Simple music complex for people." It’s a blunt instrument to destroy capitalism. For fans of politically charged lyrics over simple beats and synth lines then it’s time to Join the Euniq movement or perish
